Rework

Overview

A rework batch order can be created to address quality issues, defects, or errors in products that have already been produced. Rework batch orders are used to correct these issues by reworking or repairing the products, ensuring that they meet the required quality standards before being released to the market.

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, a rework batch order is created in the same way as a normal batch order via Production control > Works orders > All works orders and selecting the New batch order button:

When the Create batch order screen opens, the original Item number is entered, along with the Rework batch slider and the original non-conforming batch number. Notice that when the Rework batch slider is set to Yes, the active Formula number and Route number are removed as the original method of manufacture no longer applies:

When the order is created, clicking on the Formula button will allow any additional materials to be added:

Please note that the originally produced items (in this example the P4000 product) will already be included in the formula. Click the New button to add any additional materials.

Example

Consider a company that manufactures electronic devices, such as smartphones. During the quality control process, a batch of smartphones is identified as having a defect in their display screens. The company wants to address this issue before the smartphones are shipped to customers.

The company decides to create a rework batch order in D365 to address the issue. They create a new batch order specifically for reworking the smartphones in question.

  • Identifying the Issue: Quality control identifies that a batch of 100 smartphones has defective display screens, which would impact their functionality and customer satisfaction.
  • Creating a Rework Batch Order: The company decides to create a rework batch order in D365 to address the issue. They create a new batch order for the original smartphone item specifically for reworking the smartphones in question.
  • Defining the Rework Process: In the rework batch order, the original formula is ignored and the company would manually define the necessary manufacturing steps to replace the defective display screens (route) and also manually specify the required materials to repair the screen (formula lines)including the faulty smartphone, the replacement display screens and any other components needed for the repair.
