Tracking Product Weight and Dimensions

Overview

Storing the product weights and physical dimensions is useful in various aspects of supply chain management, including inventory control, shipping cost calculations, compliance with regulatory requirements and printing on documentation such as delivery notes.

In Dynamics 365

The fields that are available on the released product form are:

  • Net weight – The weight of the product itself, excluding any packaging or container.
  • Tare weight – The weight of the product itself, excluding any packaging or container.
  • Gross weight – The total weight of the product and its packaging or container.
  • Gross depth – Gross depth refers to the measurement of the product from front to back, essentially its length. It provides information about how deep or long the product is.
  • Gross width – Gross width refers to the measurement of the product from side to side, indicating its width. It provides information about how wide the product is.
  • Gross height – Gross width refers to the measurement of the product from side to side, indicating its width. It provides information about how wide the product is.
  • Volume – Volume represents the amount of space that the product occupies in three dimensions (length, width, and height) and is a calculated field derived from the gross depth, gross width, and gross height.

These attributes are crucial for determining the space required to store products in a warehouse, optimising packaging materials, and calculating shipping costs based on the size of the items. They are also used for load planning and ensuring the efficient use of transportation and storage resources.
