  • User Acceptance Testing (UAT)/Sandbox

Customers may choose to deploy additional environments for some of the following reasons:

  • Dedicated Integration Environment
  • Dedicated Performance Testing Environment
  • Dedicated Pre-Production Environment
  • Dedicated Training Environment

Overview

As part of your standard subscription your organisation will have 2 Microsoft Managed instances:

Customers may choose to deploy additional environments for some of the following reasons:

Data Migration Environment Instance

Having a separate instance for Data Migration can provide really useful. A typical scenario is that consultants will configure the static configurational data in the Gold Instance. Once that configuration has been signed off the entire Gold Instance can be backed up and saved to the Asset Library of LCS. The Gold Instance can then be restored to the Data Migration environment ready for data migration. There may be several iterations of data migration so having a dedicated environment can provide useful to sign off the data migration lifecycle

Integration Environment Instance

Having a separate instance for Integration is useful for organisations with several integration requirements.

Performance Testing Environment Instance

For customers with high-volume transactions a Performance Testing Environment can give some assurances to the business that adequate load-testing has been carried out on a separate and dedicated environment. If there are a high number of integrations involved the Performance Testing Environment can be scaled to handle the various integration scenarios.

Training Environment Instance

For customers who wish to have a dedicated training instance a separate instance can be created for this purpose. The training instance could be based initially on the Microsoft Contoso Demo data set to allow users insight into how Dynamics operates. This can be useful as the gold configuration and data migration part of the implementation is on-going and subject to change. Allowing training and early adoption to those users can provide value at the very start of the implementation. Thereafter, once the gold configuration and data migration process has been completed that data set can be restored to the training environment to allow training using the customer’s data set.

Pre-Production Environment Instance

Customers prefer to have a dedicated Pre-Production environment that is used to support Production directly. There are multiple reasons for having a Pre-Production Environment such as:

  • The data in Production can be refreshed into Pre-Production to test issues
  • There might be multiple phases of the project and whilst UAT/Sandbox is being used to test other areas that the business might be using Pre-Production will always remain as an environment to support production
  • Pre-Production can be used to test configuration changes without affecting Production directly
  • The UAT/Sandbox Environment can be used to test OneVersion updates from Microsoft before applying to Pre-Production and Production. Therefore, Pre-Production is still able to support Production as it is on the same Application and Platform Update.

Environment Tier’s

It’s important that you select the correct Tier depending on the purpose of the environment.
